ANNIKA 24/11/2012

Annika is back in care. Sue rescued her this morning because she was sitting at the bottom of a tree for quite a while. She moved into the tree when approached but Sue managed to coax her down with her leaf pole. I've assessed her condition as only 5/10. I've felt her all over; no reactions to anywhere I've felt her but her rump area is sunken. Backbone and others prominent. She has a dirty wet pouch, some brown thick fluid (old blood + ?). She's gained weight. Now 6.27kg (was 5.8 when released by Fran on 24/2/12). She had wet bottom last and was in care from 29/1/12. She has drunk 100ml lectade into her (in 2 goes). She's weed in the basket and done 6 tiny little dry pellets. She's surrounded in my cot with yummy leaf. She was out of her basket, sitting on the rim of it and the log, when I went to check on her so must be feeling a little better after some fluid and rest. I'll give her pumpkin in a couple of hours and more fluid before I go to bed. CARMEL

Annika is getting weaker. Don said she is undernourished. Whatever the underlying condition, she has been wasting for quite a while. Blood tests came back normal. I've been getting Annika to take fluids by syringe but she hasn't eaten even one leaf. She's extremely lethargic. The only idea Don left us with was that of cancer, which wouldn't be diagnosed until postmortem, so I'm probably doing palliative care. Unlike others I've cared for who have behaved like this, and who have died, her coat is still very healthy looking. It's a small ray of hope. She is very patient and gentle. She does big sighs during feeding so eating is tiring for her. CARMEL

Fran and I looked after Annika in a tag team fashion this week; but to no avail. She was very ill and haemorraging towards the end. Her breathing was rapid and shallow. She was euthanased yesterday morning.
ANNIKA HAS BEEN IN THE CARE OF HUNTER KOALA BEFORE BELOW IS THAT STORY

Got a call from Noel at 3.50pm to say there was a koala in a tree with suspected wet bottom at Lemon Tree Passage.
Arrived at the end of the tar road at Blanch St Lemon Tree Passage at 4pm. Was met by Pam Hill who reported the koala in need of assistance. She stated the koala had been in the same group of trees for 5 to 6 days and had a brown stain on its bottom. It had not left the group of 3 trees the entire time. She thought it was a male.
I observed the koala about 40 feet up the tree and with the help of Pam's binoculars could see that it was dribbling wee as it was moving and had a very dark bottom. I also noted that is was actually a female. 4.05pm rang Noel to perform apole rescue .Jay and Noel arrived at 5pm and after 20 minutes finally succeeded in bringing the koala down to a capture height. Koala safe and sound in basket by 5.25pm. The little lady koala had a very smelly bottom but eyes were very clear. Maybe 3 to 4 kg but as I have never been good as guessing weights will leave that to the experts. Again, not sure but maybe could be 2 to 3 years old????
Noel scanned but looks like no chip present. second check confirms no chip we have decided to call her Annilka ( one of my little cousins who is fascinated with all things koala)
Think thats it for now, Jay and Noel took the little "Annika" back to fran . Loreto :-)

Introducing the beautiful Annika... As Loreto told you she lives at LTP and is only here for a visit.. We were just about to release Kimmie and were given Annika... How lucky were we ???? She is a very gentle, very tolerant, very inquisitive young lady.. She is taking her sup feeds well and doing all the right things as far as leaf and pellets are concerned.... We decided as she is such a good girl we would put her in the cage a little early and hope that she continues taking feeds without too much trouble.. Took her to Don NOAHS ARK VET this afternoon.. Don told her what a good girl she was and patted her on the head... ( it is soooooo cute)... So I add a photo... He thinks, a young Adult who has probably had conjunctivitis previous to this as her eyes are asymmetrical .. her eyes are clear and beautiful now.... So.... wont be hard to clear up .. will be back home in no time.. Fran..
