HOLLEY 22/3/2015
Yesterday afternoon
(Sat 21st March 2015) Noel received a call about a dead koala found in the rear
of the yard of a house on Salamander Way. As Jacqui was out and about in the
Jeep Frank nominated Jacqui (for Noel) to attend the call out.
The property at Salamander Way was just past the Vets and just opposite the spare ground before the Council Library complex. Jacqui was told to drive down the driveway to the rear of the property which she did and met the nice people who owned the home. They had a back fence with a gate that led on to the wetlands at the rear and which they maintained a bit and used to feed the eels in the wetland water.
Right on the edge of this clearing and near the waters edge are a couple of lovely big old swampy,s and at the base of one was the body of a female koala. Around the base of the tree were a large amount of pellets which appeared to indicate at least a couple of days occupation by koala/s. On looking up into the high canopy Jacqui say a branch hanging down perpendicular but still attached to the trunk. There were no other visible signs, either on the ground, in the water or trees, that would indicate what happened or how many koalas there were there before, during or after the incident.
At the scene Jacqui inspected the body and found no visible signs of exterior injuries save a bruising on the inside of the right thigh about the size of a 10 cent piece. The pouch though slack was clean and empty and the teats normal. No sign of fresh back marks either and the body was in the first stages of decomposition as indicated by maggot infestation. Jacqui brought the koala back home and we scanned her and found out it was Holly, an older female koala know to a lot of us including I think Kathy in the first instance. We weighed her body which was 4.8 kg.
As we knew there was a possibility of a suspected pinky or joey we again gave her a final thorough examination but with the same results.
Regards,
Jacqui & Frank

HOLEY AND BABY 12/9/2014

Sue received a call from a Telstra man fixing the phone in the house next to the church on Salamander Way.. so that was lucky ... at the same time the Lady of the house was outside and found a small koala at the bottom of a tree... not an enormous tree.. could be easily reached with the leaf pole. Baby was cold and wet shivering.. Mum was in the tree so the owner tried to get baby to climb but it couldn't manage... she wedged it in a fork and walked away hoping mum would come down .. She did not .. So, the man of the house helped wrap baby in a jumper and then tied a coat around the waist of his darling .. by the time we got there baby was dry and warm ..... We left him there and got mum down and in the basket .. ran the microchip reader over her ... Holley (of course it was... could only have been her or Mia I was thinking). We then put baby with mum.. I could see something was not right with back legs but would check that out when we got home... Let Sue know... At home: Baby was hungry .. I gave him the once over on mums back then moved him to a big "bitey".. by this time it was obvious that there was no movement, feeling or reaction in either of his legs ... his spine was not deviated but there was an obvious "mark" ... flattened fur.. across his lumber spine .. no skin broken , no blood... Holley, after she gave up trying to do the "no koala here" .. enjoyed some leaf she didn't have to find herself ... couldn't find anything wrong with her... Left them alone.. When I went to get them out of the cot baby was suckling .... I knew the outlook wasn't wonderful .. Katie(NOAHS ARK VET said he has a SEVERED spine and they would be unable to treat him ... Poor Katie (NOAHS ARK VET)having to put a beautiful little boy to sleep ..... So.... Thank You Simone and Katie .... That would have taken a lot of inner strength from both of you ... Holley had/has no obvious injuries, but spent the night in Carmels cage for observation over night and will be released this afternoon as she is telling Carmel that she would rather be "out".. "if that's alright" .. We will never really know what happened to this beautiful boy (that I first felt as a pinky and have been many times to check in Salamander car park, one relocate with Annie)... but I suspect that he has fallen from the tree and landed on his back across a branch ... There had been a big boy seen in that area so maybe he thought that Holley was a good sort and encouraged baby to move ... Nothing more to say other than.. RIP gorgeous boy .... I am sure Ziggy, Clivey, Monty and all the others will look after you now... ...Fran....
23/8/2014 HOLLEY AND BABY

Holley and Joey Relocate I have received a number of calls about a koala and her baby crossing the road into Salamander Shopping Centre. I knew exactly who it would be , Holley is an older girl , this is where she lives and this is where she shows her babies. Now I can understand she probably has a passion for shopping, but she is really pushing it crossing that road all the time. Then she sits so low in a tree near the car park that everyone can see her, she doesn't worry about people making a fuss and taking photos, but it is not safe for her and a baby. Last time I was sitting with her while they ate and I told her that if I was called out again I would have to relocate her we had time for a chat, I had to wait for the traffic to ease and for her to settle. I tried to explain that even tough it was her home her little one was not as use to the traffic and might not be so lucky as it crossed the road or get caught near the automatic tellers like Ellen, one of her other babies. So came the "relocation day" as I knew it would, and of course it was cold and pouring with rain. Sue got a call from the preschool nearby. Sue called Annie who went with her husband Clive and off-sider Sharon, Annie then called me for some back-up, always good to have more people especially when you have a mother and baby. Rescue was easy as she was on that low branch again. Annie took her to a place that she had been release in before, so was familiar to her . This will give baby time to grow away from the traffic,. Hope that she takes her time getting back but that she does get back so we can keep an eye on her in her old age, she certainly deserves it FRAN

Another rescue.... Koala in distress up a sign at the BP service station....Found “distressed” koala sound asleep up a tree... in the line of trees between road into Salamander Shopping Centre car park and the day care .... Now as the cars were bumper to bumper going into the shops we decided that if she woke up and tried to cross the road she would have had some difficulty.... Still only Rebecca and I so we decided not to be heroes and get some back up to be sure we didn’t force her into the traffic.... .. So rang Simone who was giving her girl some sleeping time.....
When we rounded our troops and were ready to get her down the two security men (who contacted us) came back from seeing to some “human problems” in the centre.... perfect timing ..... Oh! Simone brought Mason with her he looked so cute in his orange safety vest ... I asked him to sit in my car to make sure Nate did not get too hot... He was a little worried and asked what I would do if he did.... J air conditioner..
Back to the rescue..... We asked the security to stop the traffic and it all went off without a hitch.. took minutes ... and she was out of the tree and into the basket .... HOLLEY... We probably could have asked her to wake up and come down by herself.... no struggle, no growling.... good girl..
Home again.... weight 5.5 kg happy healthy... pouch CE
Finally off to release two koala in Mambo ..... In the hope that they will stay there for Christmas...
We did the normal be safe .. stay away.... speech.... but we also asked if Holley would keep an eye on Nate who was over in another tree not too far away...
