HKPS VISION STATEMENT
Hunter Koala Preservation Society Inc. is dedicated to the preservation of the Tilligerry Peninsula (Port Stephens) koalas and conservation of their habitat.

HKPS MISSION STATEMENT
The Hunter Koala Preservation Society Inc. is determined to care and rehabilitate the Tilligerry Peninsula (Port Stephens), sick and/or injured koalas and their habitat. They are focused on the delivery of a professional and consistent service, and ongoing public education.

HISTORY
Formed in June 1987, the Hunter Koala Preservation Society’s aim is to assist with the management and preservation of the Port Stephens koala population.

The main impetus for the formation of the Society was the continual threat to koalas from impending urban development and sand mining resulting in the loss of their habitat. Increasing numbers of road accidents, dog attacks and diseases have contributed to the need to protect the native koala population.

The Society, along with the National parks and Wildlife Service, Port Stephens Council and the Australian Koala Foundation has established a Comprehensive Koala Plan of Management for Port Stephens.

Other achievements include the successful rezoning of land for the environmental protection of koala habitat on the Tilligerry Peninsula, the establishment of a database of sick or injured koalas and autopsy statistics.

By providing best practice of care by training carers thoroughly in the management of injured or sick koalas and by providing dedicated veterinary services the Hunter Koala Preservation Society will continue to play an active role in preserving the koala colonies of Port Stephens.
