JASMINE 17/9/2013

Hi Guy's. As you would probably have guessed from FRan's photos we got
  some
help from AUSGRID yesterday to rescue a koala at Soldiers Pt. This
koala  had
a back joey and was seen by Annie to have something badly wrong
with  her
back Rt leg. She was very high in a tree and out of our reach, to
  complicate
the situation more there were live power lines running through
the  tree.
I called AUSGRID FOR HELP to confirm that we still needed
assistance, he had  a crew and a Cherry Picker there within 15 mins!!! The
guy's (Tom &  Glenn) did a great job after a million intstructions from
us. The rescue went  perfectly. Now for the bad news. The koala is Jasmine,
rescued by Rebecca  lastyear weighing only 2.4kg. She now only weighs 4.6kg
and her joey  (female)Kia (Baby Jasmine) is around the 800/900grams. Mum's back leg looked in a dreadful  state. At first we thought it had been torn apart in a dog attack, but that  would have been the better option with at least a chance of
fixing it.  Jasmine has a large tumour which has eaten nearly all the way through the  bone. A lot of pathology has been sent off, but it looked to
Katherine the  vet when she looked at some cells under the microscope that it might be  Crypto. The other option is cancer! Will be able to confirm which
it is when  results are back, but it will make no difference for the leg. The only option  is amputation of the entire leg. Don is away at the moment, so
nothing will  be decided until he comes back.
Mum & bub are eating and pelleting well. She is on antibiotics  and pain relief and has to have dressing changed on Friday. The results will  beback by then hopefully. Cheers Sue

Hi
Guy's, We got the pathology results for Jasmine today and they couldn't have
been worse. She has tested positive for Cryptoccosis, it was also in the Lymph
Gland that Katherine sent in. Today she had the wound syringed out and re
dressed, plus more blood taken. She has an app with Mark Krockenberger next
Tues   We will have to wait for the results from the Joeys
pathology  and the consult with Krockenberger.. Mum and bub
are in  full quarantine for now. I don't know if I have told you but the joey is
female  and weighs 740 grams. Annie has called her KAI. (BABY JASMINE) Will update after
Tuesday.  Cheers Sue

Hi Guy's. Not a good day for koala carers. I met Mark Krockenberger (Vet and researcher from Sydney Uni)  at Irrawang Vets in R/Terrace this morning. . We undid the dressing on Jasmines leg and the tumour appeared  to have grown since Friday, it certainly was more prominent. But it was decided by all of us that to put her through the trauma of an amputation to then keep her
in captivity for life was ufair and inhumane. Jasmine was euthanaised at10.30am and her body has been sent by courier to Sydney Uni for a CT scan ... RIP beautiful Jasmine...

So we now have an orphaned joey. She weighed 917 grams this morning.
She is very confused and cries for mum. Ithink we should all have a cry for
her mum. Sue
The Joey is now to be called Baby Jasmine to honour her mother ... See her story ...

JASMINE HAS BEEN RESCUED BEFORE BELOW IS THAT STORY

We got a call from Sue approx 6pm last night about a small koala who had been wandering along Foreshore Drive and was now up a tree. FRAN  was right in the middle of feeding Footrot and I was just about to leave for bowling so I said I'd check on it on my way... We wrongly thought it was just going to be one of those " koala up a tree eating leaf.. will go to sleep and move when not so much traffic ..." type of call outs.
When I got there Paul and his 8 year old daughter Jasmine were there. They told me that this 'girl' koala had been in their front yard in the jacaranda tree. When they went out to have a look she came down and wandered onto the road. Paul and his wife stopped the traffic as the koala zigzagged her way down Foreshore Drive (she must have travelled about 200m). Then she climbed up a non food tree. (Jasmine said it had to be a girl because it was clean and boys roll around in the dirt and get brown dirt marks on them!!).   They pointed out the fork they had last seen her sitting in but it had become dark so they hadn't seen her for a while. I looked with the torch and found her very close to where they said. As I was looking at her she started to come down to the trunk of the tree. I ran to get the basket out of my car. The movement scared her back up and she sat watching us for a short time and then started moving slowly down again. She sat in the next fork and watched again. By this time I'd had a good look around and thought I need some help so I rang mum. The koala was in a group of 3 trees very close together and at the bottom of the trees were some small shrubs about my height so I couldn't easily get to the tree. There was lots of traffic still going past and the tree wasn't too far to the road.   About 3 minutes after I'd contacted FRAN  there was movement again. She jumped from one tree to the other, a big jump,( Jasmine was very impressed) and then started slowly creeping down. I was ready with the basket, net and straps I gave Paul the basket lid and sent him to the opposite side of the group of trees just in case she escaped. As I moved the  straps banged together and scared the little koala, so I gave them to Jasmine to hold. She wasn't too sure about this very important job lol. Very slowly the koala came down and then jumped into one of the small shrubs. She crept onto the ground, as soon as she popped her head out of the shrub I got the net over her. To my surprise Paul then put the basket lid over my net .. ( to be doubly sure ? lol) She complained a little but went quite easily into the basket. Jasmine crept over with the straps and the rescue was done  Much easier than I expected.. I looked in the basket and found that she was a girl! I got the towel over her and put her in the back seat of the car and then FRAN  and Jay arrived, just a little too late. I checked the microchip list and as we didn't have a Jasmine I thought it was appropriate that we name her that, as the family had gone to so much trouble to keep her safe I hate to think what could have happened if they hadn't been so caring... their help during the rescue, i.e. following instructions was invaluable..

We kept her last night and this morning FRAN  took her to be microchipped and she was very well behaved.
They released her in Mambo, Port Stephens Drive end.
She weighs 2.8kg and as you can see from the pictures she is beautiful
