Sammy is one very cute little boy koala... 1800 grams..

Was playing with the cars on the road outside Samurai Resort ....

Lady stopped her car in the middle of the road to hunt it off the road but he kept coming back.... a family, that I am friends with, were driving passed rung us... they were concerned about Sammy but equally concerned that there would be a car accident..

We found Sammy just inside the fence on top of a metal pole.. He couldn't be trusted to stay off the road so we brought him home with us..... Looked for a mum .... No luck

He tried to suckle the blue rescue glove, but seemed just as happy eating Mel flowers..

_  Koala overload at HKPS so off to Port Macquarie Koala Hospital..

Shayne looked at his eyes on admission and felt that there was something not quite right with one, there is the possibility that maybe he had been in contact with a car... Oh Dear where is mum ??

It was decided that as he was so small he needed some TLC and was taken home by one of their carers until he puts on some weight... he will then go into their rehab to be dehumanized and eventually returned to us.

Little Sammy is not doing very well at all. He came in orphaned at 1.7kg and was transferred to Port Macquarie with Ava because we had an acute housing shortage. He went into home care with Barb, one of Port MACQUARIE KOALA HOSPITALS  Hand raising carers. He did really well in home care and went into the Kindy on April 20th weighing 2.5kg. Seven weeks later he only weighs 2.7kg and was not looking well at all. Cheyne bought him inside for an examination and he has a very distended tummy and is full of gas. This happens with little ones that are separated from their mums too early (Hope!!!). Mum provides her joey with Colostrum from birth to weaning, which is something we are unable to do for them, and that is what is thought creates this problem. Cheyne called to see if I wanted to bring him back here to treat him or if I wanted them to keep him there. I thought it best that he stay there as he was going back into home care with Barb, who he knows and with leaf that he is used to. I thought it would be too stressful to bring him back here into care with a perfect stranger. So he is being treated with Charcoal and is going back on formula. This is not a very promising situation for Sammy and it will require an enormous amount of luck for him to overcome a setback like this. . So fingers crossed for Sammy.. Cheers Sue

Sammy- Update

Sammy is slowly improving now that he is back with his “mum”(CARER)...... He is not out of the woods yet but the outlook is not as grim .....

We have decided on an alternative plan when he is ready to leave his mum again approx 6 weeks)..... He will come to the One Mile rehab where he will be climbing a smaller food tree.... He will be by himself and will get use to the food trees from around this area.....

We are not sure exactly what caused his problem last time.. could have been that he was away from his human mum..or the other girl koalas were bashing him up...  We may never know...

This time we hope that his separation, rehab and release go without any more drama....
