Picture
Tallimba came back into care yesterday with a bung eye.
Previous history:-
2003 burnt in Mambo bushfire weighing 1.7kg. In care for
376 days!!! Then not seen again until May '12 when he came in weighing 5.7kg
with wet bottom
and  conjunctivitis of RT eye. Released weighing 8.2kg. Then
back in in Nov
'12  just for a cuddle for two days, still weighing 8.1kg. He
saw Uncle Don
this  morning and he is to have 5 days Baytril, 3 days
Prednefrin Forte and
two  weeks Terramycin. He is a real sweetie and loves
his pumkin &
Divetelac.  Not fussed on me doing anything with his eye as it
is really sore. Eating his head off, pellet & urine output is great. Cheers

the phone rings and there is a koala sitting very low in a tree with a bunch of old ladies patting it and hand feeding it leaves. He is in the Nicholii at the corner of Muller St, Peter is not answering his phone, Fran  is at the vet and releasing Ayla, Simone should be picking up Callie from Medowie after surgery and June and Doug are in Sydney. Off I go and it is Tallimba my very old boy from back in May. Fran & Jay are releasing Ayla in Mambo across the road so they turn up to assist with rescue and take him home for a feed and to see if there is anything wrong with him.

TALLIMBA HAS BEEN IN THE CARE OF HUNTER KOALA BEFOR BELOW IS THAT STORY

TALLIMBA 2003

Picture
This is Tallimba

Tallimba was caught in deliberately lit Mambo Wetland ( Salamander Bay) bush fires in 2003.. he was a 1.7 kg back baby.. Rescued by NATF disaster team sitting all by himself in a tree calling for his mother.. The NATF president was one of his rescuers and said his pitiful calling brought tears to rescuers’ eyes.. They looked for two days for his mum but she was never found.. L

He was in care for 376 days... Release Weight 5.5 kg

Tallimba at our "hospital" after the 2003 fires.

He was in company with Holly, Fleur, Gary ....and at least 3 other koala.   ( these photos supplied by Geoff and Betty Bartlett)

This koala was rescued this morning at 2am.

Sitting in the middle of Port Stephens Drive near Shores Closes Salamander Bay

He has one sore eye, and that is all I can see wrong with him at the moment. His bottom is stained but no smell. He’s eating and can do his own supplementary  feed. Not surprising as he was in care for so very long...

He’s a lovely old bloke. Hopefully it’s just fix his eye and put him back out.

His teeth are worn down below the gums and he is craving water. Lots of small wees as well. Don will do an ultra sound on him at 10am tomorrow and I think he will do a renal function test as well.

He suspects kidney disease. If this is the case he will probably be euthanased.

He is just gorgeous! Seems like he would like to climb on you. Tried to climb on Don then tried to eat his stethascope.

If you hold a bowl of water under his nose he will drink till it is empty.

Loves Nicholii. Drops a lot of his swampy though.

Knows all about milk and pumpkin.

He has the brown dry looking coat that Don claims
is associated with kidney disease as well. At the moment he is happily
sitting in the cage gorging on Nicholii.

Right eye has Chlamydia but not too bad

He had serious fire damage to his claws on all four feet. All the claws have
grown back and are all perfectly formed and look like they have never been
burnt.

Tallimba went to Don this morning for an ultra sound and in
house bloods for Renal Function. He passed both with flying colours!!

Good boy Tallimba. So he is home on antibiotics for his eye.  He definitely has wet bottom but his bladder looks ok.

Breakfast time is most enjoyable ...he is a pro so it goes off beautifully. His eye is responding really well. Four days of treatment to go...

He comes to the floor each morning, not to get out but to see what I've got... So I give him his water bowl and he has a drink while I do all the sweeping and leaf with the door open. Then I just scoop him up and put him on the logs while I hose and fill up tubes. Too easy.

An update on Tallimba. The dear old boy has been in
care two weeks today and has only one more day of antibiotics to go. He has
responded really well with the eye looking great and doing big wees. When he
first came in he was dehydrated with his skin tenting and he was craving water.

He weighed 6.7kg and wasn't eating much and his pellets were awful and not many
of them.

All that has changed, with him now weighing 7.59kg (gain of 890grams). He seems to have grown into that loose skin and is eating very well with lovely pellets.

His scent gland has even started working and he couldn't care less about drinking water anymore.

He will have a week of observation now the antibiotics have stopped....

looks like being released on the Monday of the long weekend, all going to plan that is...

Great outcome for a beautiful boy.

Hi Everyone. Just a quick update on Tallimba. He is doing really great!
Eating really well and seems happy (koala happy) in cage. But after 6 days
off antibiotics he started with the lots of little wees again. So I am
giving him another week of Chloramphenical to try and rectify this. I can't
release him unless I'm sure he is going to do really well. It's winter and
he is an old guy, so he needs to be in the best condition possible.
he is most impressed that the pumpkin has started again. :-)

Hi Everyone, Dear Tallimba was released today. He seems to have enjoyed his time in care, putting on a record 1.6kg!! He came in at 6.7kg and went out at 8.3kg. He was eating that well the last couple of weeks that I was having trouble keeping the leaf up to him. We (Fran, Jay, Simone and I) walked him deep into his home territory of the Mambo Wetlands. The bracken ferns in there are that tall we couldn’t see over the top of them. He climbed a beautiful big Swampy. He stopped close to the top when he had reached the sunshine, had a big scratch, something to eat and a huge wee. But being a male, his aim was off and he missed all of us!!  Special thanks to Fran for the photos, Jay for helping me carry the fat boy all the way in there and then finding our way back out and Sahun who was kind enough to stop at 2am and get him off the road and call me. He was such a beautiful koala to care for, I would have been happy to keep him forever. Unfortunately we are not allowed to do that, so he will be missed greatly by me. Let’s hope with all the weight he has put on he will see winter out comfortably. Cheers Sue
